The International Women’s Day was celebrated at Bosco College of Teacher Education, Dimapur on the 7th of March 2023 keeping the theme, “Innovation and Technology for Gender”. The programme was chaired by Miss Meyipokla, and started with a bible reading and prayer by Sister Lisha. It was followed by a speech on “Women Empowerment” by Miss Rhian. She highlighted the subjective nature of the meaning of women empowerment that varied from region to region. She further drew light on the objective of women empowerment in India as the liberation from socio-economic restrictions which, in the context of Nagaland, the Naga women seemed to enjoy more freedom of expression and equality. However, she also gave a critical review of the status of women in Naga society in relation to absence of women leadership in the churches and their powerlessness in property rights. Thus, reminding the necessity for revising the cultural and traditional systems that create ill gender disparity. The programme was then followed by a special song titled ‘Rise Up’ that was performed by Mr. Lanukaba. The song pointed out that women who rise up will lift up men too. Further, a speech on women’s rights was presented by Miss Withiunile. She started the speech by coding Hilary Clinton’s “Women’s rights are Human rights”. She highlighted some of the key violation of human rights of women, such as violation of right to education, violation of domestic violence act, violation of right to live and dowry prohibition act, violations of right to equal opportunity for employment and right to property. Today science, technology and cinema play a crucial role in enlightening and helping a woman to embrace her rights and identity as a woman. Thus, the programme was finally concluded with a benediction by Miss Elikana of second semester.
